The Institute of Molecular Science and Technology (ISTM) of CNR is a Research Institute devoted to theoretical and experimental Modeling of Molecular and Nanostructured Systems and to the design, synthesis and characterization of precursors and functional molecules.
In particular the catalysis group mainly focuses its research activity on the development of materials and heterogeneous catalysts for biorefinery driven technologies. Besides other kinds of biomass derived materials, such as oils and terpenes, widely studied at ISTM, lignocellulosic materials and wastes of the agro industry are undoubtedly the leading ones in the roadmap to bioeconomy. The use of catalysts developed at ISTM in this field is oriented to the valorisation of wastes and residues into chemicals.
In particular ISTM group has a consolidated experience in the design and development of bifunctional solid catalysts based on non noble metals, able to promote selective cascade reactions, thus allowing to set up multistep processes in one pot, i.e. in the case of the one-pot transformation of GVL into valeric esters. The use of heterogeneous systems able to promote different transformations is desirable for a process intensification approach, interesting for both economical and environmental reasons, and it is one of the main expertise of the catalysis group based in Milan. The Institute has moreover several facilities and instruments useful for the project realisation.

            We mainly offer our expertise in the selective transformation of oils, terpenes and oligosaccharides, also deriving from residues of the agro industrial chain by using solid catalysts. Our main approach is the design of efficient catalytic systems for biorefinery driven technologies.
